Tom van malderen

The multifaceted practice of Malta-based architect Tom Van Malderen probes the intersections between art, design, and architecture. His works reflect on the manifold ways we utilize environments and objects ; approaching their physical appearance as a complex universe of overlapping cultural references, and with a keen interest in raising questions about usefulness, value, ambiguity, and accessibility. Van Malderen invites visitors and users to imagine and experience the fictions and frictions of our inhabited space, its politics, its history, its materiality, and other real and unreal constructs.

After earning a Master in Architecture at the Sint-Lucas in Brussels, he worked with the Atelier Lucien Kroll in Brussels and with the Architecture Project in London and Valletta. He is part of the Contemporary Art Platform FRAGMENTA Malta and the International Short Film Festival KINEMASTIK and regularly contributes to international magazines.
